In the month of May, many people will invoke the name of Mary under many titles. Below, we explore two such titles.
In the Litany of Our Lady, also known as the Litany of Loretto, one of the titles given to Mary is Comforter of the Afflicted. It was our Blessed Mother’s own personal experience of sorrow, her own martyrdom of suffering, as she walked with Jesus on the road to Calvary, that this title arises. Our Blessed Mother has an immense and sympathetic heart and we can come to her with our own afflictions whatever they may be.
Mother of Mercy
The Mother of God once said to her faithful servant, St Bridget of Sweden, “No matter how numerous a person’s sins may be, if he turns to me with a sincere purpose of amendment, I am prepared forthwith to receive him graciously, for I do not regard the number of sins he has committed, but look only upon the dispositions with which he comes to me, for I feel no aversion in healing his wounds, because I am called and I am in truth, the Mother of Mercy.”
