Feast of St Matthias: Acts of the Apostles 1: 15-26.

Today we celebrate the Feast of St Matthias. St Peter calls on the assembled Apostles and Disciples to replace Judas. They spend time in prayer, before they cast lots. This process of casting lots, can be seen in the Old Testament, as it was used by the Levites. In this particular situation they believed that God had already chosen Matthias and this was a way to know his will, that God’s decision, could be verified without error, by using this human process.

This continuance of the Jewish way of appointing people did not last long in the Church. What we must remember is this was prior to the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and this changes everything.

We all have to make choices and decisions. But how do we do this?  Do we pray about them? If indeed we do pray, how much time do we spend in prayer? Do we pay more attention to what I feel or what someone else is advising.

In our lives, we can be impetuous and rush into things and then we wonder why it all goes wrong. We need to make reference to God, to listen. We cannot see what he sees, the full picture, the complete story. Entrusting our lives to God, will show in the end, that indeed it was efficacious and providential.
