St John 14: 27-31
It was prophesied particularly by the prophets Isaiah and Micah, that the Messiah, the anointed one, the Christ, would offer peace as his Messianic gift to us. Jesus, the Messiah speaks about that very peace in our Gospel today. It is a peace that the world cannot give He tells us, firstly because it is his own gift and secondly it comes down from heaven and transcends anything the world can offer.
In Jesus, the peace that he offers reconciles us with God and with each other. Very often in worldly peace, peace has been established through greater military force, it is contrived and accomplished through coercion and threat, intimidation and even through terror. This kind of peace destroys trust and undermines lasting peace, it only serves to create resentment and never leads to justice which is a central component of authentic and true peace.
We ask ourselves today the question. Are we at peace with God, our neighbour and are we at peace with ourselves? Who and what disturbs our peace. If for any reason we are bereft of peace or know of someone who is, go to the origin and principal of peace and ask for that gift.
“You pay God a compliment by asking great things of him”
