1st May: Joseph the Worker

St Joseph has two Feast days in the Liturgical Calendar. Find out more about the feast of Joseph the Worker below.
We celebrate St Joseph, Husband of Mary, on 19th March; we celebrate St Joseph the Worker on 1st of May.

The Venerable Pope Pius XII instituted this feast in 1955 to counter the workers May Day rallies sponsored by the communist parties.

Pius XII said “The Father created all and asked humanity to continue the work of creation. We find dignity in our work, in raising a family, in participating in the life of the Father’s creation. St Joseph the Worker was able to help participate in the deepest mystery of Salvation. The spirit flows to you and to all men from the heart of the God-man, Saviour of the world, but certainly, no worker was ever more completely and profoundly penetrated by it than the foster father of Jesus, who lived with him in closest intimacy and community of family life and work. Thus, if you wish to be close to Christ Go to St Joseph”
